# Managing your taxonomy

The taxonomy section is where the Analyst reviews, curates, and organizes the results captured during search. It is accessible from the **hierarchy icon** in the left navigation menu.

The taxonomy is shared across all Analysts in the workspace. Every decision an Analyst makes adds to it, making every future search and model more precise over time.

## The taxonomy panel

The left panel displays the full category tree. Each category shows two counts: the number of items selected (left) and the total number of images in the category (right, shown with an image icon).

Categories can be nested to any depth. Selecting a category in the tree loads its images in the panel below, displayed as thumbnails with date, sensor, and coordinates for each.

Hovering over a category reveals four action icons on the right:

* **Add subcategory** (folder/plus sign) — adds a new category nested under the selected one.
* **Rename** (pencil) — renames the category.
* **Move** (equal sign) — moves all images in the category to another category.
* **Export** (down arrow) - exports the category and it's sub-categories to CVAT 1.1 or GeoJSON file
* **Delete** (trash) — removes the category.

## Exporting a Taxonomy Category

Hovering over a category reveals an export action icon alongside Add subcategory, Rename, Move, and Delete:

* **Export category** — exports the category to a downloadable file.

{% hint style="info" %}
Exporting a category also includes all of its subcategories and their images in the resulting file.
{% endhint %}

**To export a category:**

1. In the taxonomy panel, hover over the category you want to export.
2. Select the **Export category** icon (down arrow).
3. Choose an export format:
 * **CVAT 1.1** — downloads as a .zip file containing the exported images and an `annotations.xml` file.
 * **GeoJSON** — downloads as a .geojson file, not a .zip.
4. The file downloads, ready for use outside RAIC Fed.

{% hint style="info" %}
RAIC Fed's role ends at the download. What you do with the exported file afterward is outside the scope of this document.
{% endhint %}

## Selecting images

The following controls appear below the category tree when a category is selected:

* **Select All** — selects all images in the current category.
* **Move To** — moves selected images to a different category.
* **Reject Selected** — rejects the selected images and removes them from the category.
* **Clear Selection** — deselects all selected images.

The eye icon on a thumbnail indicates the image has been reviewed and approved. Selecting any thumbnail shows that image in map context on the right, including its location in the source imagery and a timeline at the bottom showing when it was captured.

## Reviewing a category

The **Review Category** button opens a focused review mode for stepping through images in a category one at a time.

1. Select a category in the tree to load its images.
2. Select **Review Category**.
3. The panel displays one image at a time with its source imagery in the map on the right. The current item number and total count are shown above the image.
4. Use the green checkmark to approve the image and keep it in the category, or press the **up arrow** key.
5. Use the red reject icon to remove it from the category, or press the **down arrow** key.
6. The image advances automatically after approving or rejecting. Use the left and right arrows to move between images without approving or rejecting.
7. Select **Move To** to reassign the current image to a different category.
8. Select **Save Progress** to save approvals and rejections before exiting review mode.
9. Select the X to exit review mode.

Approved and rejected counts are displayed at the bottom of the review panel as the Analyst works through the category.

## What's next

With a well-curated taxonomy in place, the Analyst can build shallow models to automate detection at scale. Continue to \[Building a shallow model →].
